A quick reminder that books on 3LB are being moved to either the HDL (High Density Library, a storage facility) or the TFDL. Until the TFDL opens, both HDL and TFDL books need to be requested via the catalogue. Here are a couple of examples:

This is from their marketing department. WIT Press publishes some proceedings that cover mathematics and statistics.
One needs to register for a free account to be able to access the papers. I registered and the pdfs seem to download fine.

Over the break, library staff worked hard to get the new Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) ready for January 3. The Learning Commons, spanning the first two floors, is open, with new computers and workrooms.
Most of the "old" Info Commons computers in MacKimmie will slowly be decommissioned in the near future.

AMS Research Journals Archive Available Free

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has established a complete digital archive of its mathematical research journals. Over 34,000 articles are available from over 100 years of high-quality mathematical research in 'Journal of the AMS,' 'Mathematics of Computation,' 'Proceedings of the AMS,' 'Transactions of the AMS,' and 'Bulletin of the AMS.' All back issues, starting with each journal's inaugural issue through 2005, are now freely available in electronic format.

Researchers can browse the contents of each journal to find articles and authors in each volume and issue, and can search across the entire archive by journal or group of journals at: http://www.ams.org/joursearch. View the abstract, references (with links to MathSciNet), bibliographic information, Mathematics Subject Classifications for each article, or view a PDF of the full article.

PSA - Catalogue Outage

The catalogue will be down on starting the morning of Thursday, May 6 to Tuesday the 11th for an update.
What does this mean for you?
1. We'll have our test catalogue up instead of the real-time version, so if it says a book is out, it might actually be in or vice-versa.

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the University of Calgary’s Information Commons, Michael Ridley will challenge us to look forward to a broader understanding of services for learners as we prepare to move into our new facility. The opening of the new Learning Commons in the Taylor Family Digital Library will see increased opportunities for academic engagement. At the University of Guelph, the Library, Computing and Communications Services, Office of Open Learning, Student Affairs and Teaching Support Services collaborate to support and enhance undergraduate and graduate student learning, writing, research, numeracy, and technology at their Learning Commons.

Following his presentation, Mr. Ridley will be joined on a panel by leaders from the University of Calgary for a question and answer session. Our objective is to stimulate discussion of 21^st century learning environments, the needs that must be addressed and what each of us can bring to enrich the environment.

Panellists from the UofC are:
Meg Martin, Vice President Academic, University of Calgary Students Union;
Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) and University Librarian;
Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost (Students); and,
Harold Esche, Chief Information Officer.

About the Speaker:
Michael Ridley is Chief Information Officer and University Librarian, University of Guelph. Ridley holds degrees from the University of Guelph (BA), the University of New Brunswick (MA) and the University of Toronto (MLS). Previously he held positions at the University of Waterloo and McMaster University.
Ridley has served as President of the Canadian Association for Information Science, President of the Ontario Library Association, member of the Board of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and Chair of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers (CUCCIO).
In 2007 he was named "Academic Librarian of the Year" by the Ontario College and University Library Association (OCULA), a division of the Ontario Library Association (OLA). In 2008 he was awarded the newly renamed Larry Moore OLA Distinguished Service Award from the Ontario Library Association.

Web of Science content expanded from 1900 to present

The library has enhanced access to the Web of Science database by expanding its science content from 1900 to present. Previously, science content was only available from 1975. Web of Science also provides content from the Social Science Index from 1956 and the Arts & Humanities Index from 1975.
Web of Science provides access to nearly 9,300 prestigious, high impact research journals in the world and is the primary tool for determining how many times an author has been cited in the literature.

PhysMath Central Publishes v.1 of PMC Physics A

Increase Access to Your Published Articles

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) recently released the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum, a new tool for authors in Canada to retain key rights to the journal articles they publish.

Traditional publishing agreements often require that authors grant exclusive rights to the publisher. The new SPARC Canadian Author Addendum enables authors to secure a more balanced agreement by retaining select rights, such as the rights to reproduce, reuse, and publicly present the articles they publish for non-commercial purposes. It will help Canadian researchers to comply with granting council public access policies, such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Policy on Access to Research Outputs. The Canadian Addendum reflects Canadian copyright law and is an adaptation of the original U.S. version of the SPARC Author Addendum.

"The SPARC Canadian Author Addendum allows researchers to have maximum impact and visibility for their publications - with the comfort of knowing important rights still belong to them," stated Carolynne Presser, Chair of the CARL Scholarly Communication Committee and Director of Libraries at the University of Manitoba.

"The Canadian Addendum is an important contribution to the ongoing international movement to support authors in making research articles accessible to all who may benefit from their findings," said Heather Joseph, Executive Director of SPARC. "Canada has been a leader in the move toward increased access to research and we're pleased to have played a role in collaborating with CARL on this important initiative."

An explanatory brochure complements the Addendum. Both the brochure and addendum are available in French and English on the CARL and SPARC Web sites and will be widely distributed. SIAM panel suggests improvements for CSE education
SIAM’s Working Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Undergraduate education has issued a comprehensive report on how schools can improve the level of training offered to future mathematicians and engineers.

The report discusses the value of an undergraduate CSE program and provides model programs. Included are short overviews of successful CSE programs that demonstrate the various flavors of programs possible at the undergraduate level. Capsule profiles of students in these programs capture the value of internships for students in this area of study.

David Marshall is named SIAM Publisher
David K. Marshall was appointed Publisher and assumed management of SIAM’s journal and book publishing operations on March 26.

“SIAM has a long history of providing the highest quality publications in mathematics and computational sciences to libraries, institutions and individuals” commented James Crowley, Executive Director of SIAM. “David possesses a wealth of experience in both book and journal publishing. He is well equipped to use this experience to keep SIAM’s publishing program in the forefront of scholarly publishing.”

Prior to joining SIAM, David held the position of Senior Publisher with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, where he was responsible for managing a portfolio of neurology journals with annual revenues exceeding $18 million annually. He has also held senior positions with MedCases, Inc., a provider of online education programs, and Harcourt Health Communications.

“I’m excited with the opportunity I’ve been given at SIAM,” David said. “I’ve been very impressed with my colleagues and look forward to working with them to build our program.”

A new SIAM journal that centers on mathematical and computational imaging science began accepting submissions on April 25.

Guillermo Sapiro of the University of Minnesota serves as Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences. He has assembled an Editorial Board of the best-known names in the field (see http://www.siam.org/journals/siims/board.php), that will handle accelerated peer-review of the manuscripts. Along with the manuscript itself, supplemental multimedia files are strongly encouraged to exploit the endless possibilities of an electronic publication with the use of color, animations, video, and presentations.

A brochure is available in hard copy or via pdf download at the journal website. Published papers are expected to begin posting online early in 2008.

The Journal on Imaging Sciences will be SIAM's second all-electronic journal. For further information on editorial policy, review procedures, and submission of papers, see

SIAM joins Google Book Search program
Under an agreement signed recently between SIAM and Google, SIAM books will be added to the Google Book Search (GBS) Program.

Book Search has been developed by Google to allow users to search for titles or topics, and then explore segments of the actual book online. It is currently undergoing beta testing, but is available to the public at http://books.google.com

Under the program, more than 330 SIAM books will be digitally reproduced, with portions of each available to online searchers. Eventually, Google hopes to have these digital versions available for purchase in a variety of formats. Meanwhile, links will be available on the Google Book Search pages for motivated users to buy the traditional print versions through SIAM and other online retailers.

SIAM Job Board offers new online career resource
Employers and job seekers in mathematics and related fields now have a unique and easy way to connect, via the new online SIAM Job Board.

Job seekers can set up a personal account to find jobs, manage resumes, and set up job alerts. Employers can set their personal account online to quickly post jobs, search through resumes, and manage their recruiting online.

New Officers take their places at SIAM
Cleve Moler, a SIAM author and founder of The MathWorks, Inc., began a two-year term as president of SIAM on January 1, succeeding Martin Golubitsky (University of Houston), who spends 2007 as past-president.

Also taking up new positions this year are Irene Fonseca (Carnegie Mellon University) and Alison Ramage (University of Strathclyde), both elected in the fall of 2006 to the SIAM Council. The two other Council contests decided in the fall election were both won by incumbents: Douglas Arnold (Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, University of Minnesota) and Michael Heath (University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign). Council members serve three-year terms; an individual can serve up to three consecutive terms.

The library has just subscribed to a neat new product, CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences . So far, it seems to be more skewed to statistics than some of the other areas of mathematics.

It searches for tables, graphs, maps, images, etc. in the scholarly literature. For example, if you are looking for tilings, statistical tables, graphs of functions, and other visuals, you can use Illustrata.

The updated site offers enhanced functionality and a fresh new design. Later this year, Project Euclid will provide a set of tools to facilitate the peer review process for journals.

New to Project Euclid with this upgrade are the Notre Dame Lecture Series on Mathematics (1942--1990) and, by year's end, the entire run of the Proceedings of the Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability (1946--1971). Both are available on an open access basis.

Scopus Trial

We are trialling Scopus, a relatively new product from Elsevier, and would like some faculty feedback. At that point, it was a smaller search product with much-less-developed citation analysis features. Since that time, the abstracting and indexing coverage has been broadened and the citation features have been further developed. Today is the day -- we expect SIAM Journals Online and Locus to be delivered from the Scitation platform starting this afternoon Eastern time.

Many of you may have read about, or heard me talk about, the new features and enhancements our users will gain from this move, including BiBTeX citation downloads, expanded reference linking to include Inspec and MEDLINE, forward citation linking, and a robust search engine that searches across current and Locus content seamlessly.

Equally important is what is being maintained. Your institutional IP addresses have been migrated and we expect no interruption in IP-based access. The http://epubs.siam.org and http://locus.siam.org homepage URLs are not changing, nor are the URLs for each individual journal homepage (e.g., http://locus.siam.org/SIAP/siap_toc.html , http://epubs.siam.org/SIAP/siap_toc.html). All SIAM DOIs will continue to resolve correctly.

As part of the platform change, the links to individual SIAM articles are changing. If your link resolver does not use the article DOI, but rather the scripts using journal_volume_issue_page or journal_volume_page, please contact me directly for the modifications to that script.

While we have tested and retested everything involved with this switch, some minor problems are sure to come up. Some things Andrew would like us to think about:

If you look at our catalogue record for Science, the 1880-1996 range is actually covered in full, over a few fulltext sources. Most of these databases are third-party aggregators, a few are ones where we own the content. If we go with the Science Classic deal, which will cost $12,750 US for a one-time purchase, will we be needlessly duplicating content or, on the other hand, will we be providing another access option and a more stable source for what is extremely popular content? Is there something about the product that gives it a step-up from the other databases with the same content?

New Open Access Journals: Algorithms for Molecular Biology; Biointerphases

Algorithms for Molecular Biology is now available from both its primary website on BioMed Central and from a newly established mirror site on PubMed Central.

It is also looking for manuscripts on novel algorithms for biological sequence and structure analysis, phylogeny reconstruction, and combinatorial algorithms and machine learning.

Sage Journals Now Offer Tables of Contents RSS Feeds

Thousand Oaks, California, London, United Kingdom, and New Delhi, India (April 21, 2006) – SAGE Publications announced today that all of its journals now offer tables of contents RSS feeds on the SAGE Journals Online platform located at http://online.sagepub.com .

The roll out of this new feature ensures SAGE remains at the forefront of electronic publishing by offering the most flexible routes to the online content of the company’s 400+ journals. SAGE Journals Online already provides advanced alerting services with tables of contents, keyword, author and citation alerts available alongside the new RSS option.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (also known as Rich Site Summary) and is an XML specification that allows content providers (such as SAGE) to provide a portion or all of their content via XML files that are then read by an RSS reader or web browser. RSS facilitates the ability for users to select and pull content from a variety of different content providers using their RSS reader or web browser. The RSS feed sends headlines with links and brief descriptions directly to users' desktops as soon as the desired content is available.

Faculty Technology Days is an annual opportunity for faculty and graduate students to attend a series of informational and instructional sessions which focus on primary resources, research tools, instructional tips and new developments in teaching, research resources and technology.

New Product: ARTstor

Note: This url provides access to ARTstor, however you can register to access further tools, etc.

ARTstor is an art image database, but you can use any of the images to supplement your presentations and lectures. You can either download a client for displaying the images or just capture them for PowerPoint.

Key collections include:

* The Image Gallery: a large (initially about 200,000) and continually expanding pool of images intended to offer the value usually associated with an academic slide library. The Image Gallery also embraces an Art History Survey Collection of about 4,000 images of key monuments, defined by a concordance of ten standard art history survey texts.
* The Illustrated Bartsch: about 57,000 images of Old Master European prints (engravings, etchings, woodcuts, etc.) from the 15th to the 19th Century, embodying the work of hundreds of printmakers derived from one of the great art reference publications of the past quarter century.
* The Carnegie Arts of the United States Collection: about 4,500 images of canonic works of American art and architecture, selected by a scholarly advisory committee and a staple of teaching in American studies for forty years.
* The Huntington Archive of Asian Art: about 12,000 images of Asian art, curated by the art historians John and Susan Huntington and derived largely from the photo archive they have created at Ohio State University.
* The Mellon International Dunhuang Archive: high-quality digital images of the Buddhist cave grottoes in Dunhuang, China and associated objects now physically located in collections worldwide.
* The Museum of Modern Art Architecture and Design Collection: about 8,000 images of approximately 6,200 design objects and drawings from the Department of Architecture and Design of The Museum of Modern Art in New York
