Link to Online Lecture Notes in Mathematics Added to Library Pages

A link to Lecture Notes in Mathematics has been added to the
Find Books page of the Mathematics and Statistics Library Web pages.

The link goes to SpringerLink, the online platform for LNM. From there, you will need to search for lecture notes in mathematics. This gives you a list of all LNM book chapters, titles, etc.
To view LNM by volume number, click on the Lecture Notes in Mathematics link.

You can also access SpringerLink directly at:

Scopus Trial

We are trialling Scopus, a relatively new product from Elsevier, and would like some faculty feedback. If they have any comments or questions, contact me, jennifer.lee@ucalgary.ca or Andrew Waller, waller@ucalgary.ca. We last looked at Scopus about a year-and-a-half ago. At that point, it was a smaller search product with much-less-developed citation analysis features. Since that time, the abstracting and indexing coverage has been broadened and the citation features have been further developed. Of the two aspects of Scopus (abstracting & indexing vs. citation features), we're especially interested in what you think about the citation side.

Scopus Overview: What is it? (From the web site)

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources. It's designed to find the information scientists need. Quick, easy and comprehensive, Scopus provides superior support of the literature research process. Updated daily, Scopus offers:

Over 15,000 titles from 4,000 different publishers
Over 12,850 academic journals including coverage of 535 Open Access journals
750 conference proceedings
600 trade publications
28 million abstracts
245 million references, added to all abstracts
Results from 200 million scientific web pages
12.7 million patent records from 4 patent offices
Seamless links to full-text articles and other library resources
Innovative tools that give an at-a-glance overview of search results and refine them to the most relevant hits
Alerts to keep you up-to-date on new articles matching your search query, or by favorite author

Scopus is the easiest way to get to relevant content fast. Tools to sort, refine and quickly identify results help you focus on the outcome of your work. You can spend less time mastering databases and more time on research.

Safari 5.0 - New Interface for Safari Tech Books

Safari Tech is a collection of online computer software, computer programming and information technology books, including cryptography, that the Library subscribes to.

The following is a message from ProQuest about Safari Tech.

~~~
ProQuest is pleased to announce the release of Safari 5.0. The new interface will be available on August 19, 2006.
This release brings a new look and feel to the interface along with improved search capabilities. Search functionality will remain the same so users will still have the ability to keyword and code fragment search. The interface includes the following enhancements:
* "Graphically rich" books are now supported - See representations of book content in Safari for titles with particularly complex typography. The "Graphically rich" content offers improved display of illustrative content from charts and graphs to black and white photographs to color screen displays, allowing Safari to offer you more titles from Peachpit and Adobe Press on Photoshop, Flash and software for graphic programming and applications. This new content is perfect for web designers, web developers and those studying for careers in creative professions
* Faster Page Refresh - Using Ajax, Safari loads pages faster and more efficiently.
* Suggested Search - As you type your search term Safari suggests, in real time, expressions from the most popular searches our users have entered.
* Convenient Access to Advanced Search Parameters - A new dropdown provides access to filtering on book titles, section titles, code fragments, author, and publisher.
* Choice Between Popularity and Text-based Relevancy in Search - A new slider bar allows you to weight your search results based on popularity or relevancy ranked by book.
* Improvements to "Additional Reading" links - When you click on an "Additional reading" link at the bottom of book content pages, the destination section is now viewable in full.
* Amazon reviews and ratings for thousands of titles
We hope you find the new interface easier to use and thank you for continuing to support ProQuest and the products we provide.
We welcome customer feedback. Please email your comments to platform.feedback@il.proquest.com.
SIAM Journals Online Now on Scitation Platform
This switch should happen some time in the early afternoon today, Aug 15. Let me know if you are having problems accessing any of the SIAM journals (jelee at ucalgary dot ca).
From the PAMnet mailing list:
Today is the day -- we expect SIAM Journals Online and Locus to be delivered from the Scitation platform starting this afternoon Eastern time.
Many of you may have read about, or heard me talk about, the new features and enhancements our users will gain from this move, including BiBTeX citation downloads, expanded reference linking to include Inspec and MEDLINE, forward citation linking, and a robust search engine that searches across current and Locus content seamlessly.
Equally important is what is being maintained. Your institutional IP addresses have been migrated and we expect no interruption in IP-based access. The http://epubs.siam.org and http://locus.siam.org homepage URLs are not changing, nor are the URLs for each individual journal homepage (e.g., http://locus.siam.org/SIAP/siap_toc.html , http://epubs.siam.org/SIAP/siap_toc.html). All SIAM DOIs will continue to resolve correctly.
As part of the platform change, the links to individual SIAM articles are changing. If your link resolver does not use the article DOI, but rather the scripts using journal_volume_issue_page or journal_volume_page, please contact me directly for the modifications to that script.
While we have tested and retested everything involved with this switch, some minor problems are sure to come up. Please contact me (muccie@siam.org), SIAM Customer Service (service@siam.org), or the Scitation Help Desk (help@scitation.org) if you or your users experience any problems or have any questions.
As always, I welcome your comments and feedback and thank you for your support of SIAM journals.
With warmest regards,
Mary Rose
